Manipal Hospitals using machine learning in Oncology to provide personalized treatment recommendations for cancer patients. This is one of the most advanced artificial intelligence projects in the world using cognitive computing and natural language processing technologies. Currently, with just 1600 oncologists across India, the oncologists at the hospital are stretched to keep themselves abreast of the best treatments possible for their patients. The technology uses machine learning to keep improving on the treatment recommendations as it gets trained with more patients. The team was multi-disciplinary group of clinical, technology and pharmacy experts. Using project management, the team was able to co-ordinate with Manipal Corporate hospitals and teaching hospitals doctors and staff, as well as with clinical and technology experts.
The team also worked with leading technology vendor in cognitive to test the natural language processing capability that allows automatic data extraction from histopathology. Novel cost feature was designed. This would help doctors share cost information of each chemotherapy regime, thereby helping the patient be aware of treatment costs and increase transparency. The team also has devised novel ways to share Watson treatment statistics and treatment education information to the patient by automatically generating personalized PDF files that the patient can later carry with them.
