Digital Strategy:

When the Government of India rolled out the Goods and Service Tax (GST) for Airlines on 1st July, 2017, it lacked clarity and the information provided was insufficient. After several brainstorming sessions with the ministry, Vistara decided to move forward with a worst-case hypothesis presuming that the Airline Global Distribution Systems (GDSs) will do only the GST collection and the remaining 90 percent of work will have to be done at Vistara’s end.

The team at Vistara started participating in several industry forums and workshops along with the other local and international carriers to gather as much clarity as possible and to understand the industry’s stance on scenarios where no clarity was available. Finally, the team chalked out the business strategy and developed necessary algorithms and data-lake to create the desired outputs i.e. GST invoices, GST debit notes, GST credit notes and GST returns. Vistara eCommerce too was enhanced to accommodate capturing of GST details for its direct customers.

Interestingly, Vistara’s strategy was adopted as standard industry solution by all Indian airlines. Vistara was the first Full Service Carrier to send GST invoices and file GST returns within the time limit. As of March 2018 they had processed more than 4,000,000 GST transactions, created more than 800,000 GST invoices and dispatched more than 300,000 emails.
