Is cloud computing just market hype or is it a sound business strategy? Is it the bunch of old technologies that have been newly combined in a user-friendly format? A CIO.com survey demonstrates the uneasiness that these doubts have introduced. A full 58 percent of respondents say they are interested in adopting the cloud, but have their apprehensions. Among other questions IT leaders have, the cost of cloud computing is a critical one, especially if it adds up to make a business case. On the other hand, it is clear that the cloud allows enterprises to leverage economies of scale and increase agility. There are instances in which the cloud makes excellent business sense. Take for example a retailer during a shopping intensive holiday-season.

Santhosh D'Souza

Chief Technologiest, Sun Microsystems

In an interview with CIO.in Santhosh D'Souza, Chief Technologist, Sun Microsystems said that whenever companies scale up they tend to over provision. This is inevitable when companies are scaling for growth. The price paid for under provisioning is significantly high. He also pointed out that technologies like virtualization are beneficial when it comes to scaling up. Scaling up can be from server, storage and networking application standpoint. He also said that public clouds might not be the right platform for companies but IT infrastructure are increasingly incorporating elements of cloud computing platform for business growth and to meet the demands of business units to increase  computing capacity

Rohit Kumar Rai

Rohit Kumar Rai, national manager-ISV/TP and training, Novell India, emphasized on the the rapidly growing need for intelligent workload management in organizations. He said that the concept of intelligent workload management is driven by the fact that CIOs have to balance two conflicting requirements of their organizations - flexibility and control.  Because of the hype around new technologies like SaaS, virtualization and cloud computing., the computing environment is changing at a fast pace and the CIO is faced with the task of providing a seamless computing experience. Rai said that a CIO is also entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the access to enterprise critical data, providing real-time security control and meeting the ever increasing compliance requirements. In order to deal with this complex situation, CIOs should leverage intelligent workload management effectively. He said that intelligent workload management is a pragmatic approach to handling and managing a complex computing environment.

Santhosh D’Souza, chief technologist, Sun Microsystems, said that whenever companies scale up they tend to over-provision. This is inevitable when companies are scaling for growth because the price for under-provisioning is high, whether it’s from a server, storage or networking standpoint. To optimize their operations, he suggested that enterprise turn to technologies like virtualization when they scale up. He also encouraged companies to invest in applications that have open APIs and adhere to open standards. He also said that public clouds might not be the right platform for companies but IT infrastructure is increasingly incorporating elements of cloud computing for business growth and to meet the demands of business units to increase computing capacity.
