Airtel, Jio hire new CTOs; Jagbir Singh exits Jio

Reliance Jio CTO Jagbir Singh quits, Airtel CTO Shyam Mardikar takes over; Airtel brings back old time loyalist Randeep Singh Sekhon as CTO.

After a six year long stint at Bharti Airtel, Shyam Mardikar has joined competitor Reliance Jio Infocomm as Group CTO-Mobility. Mardikar has more than 24 years of experience in telecommunications industry across network and IT domains in strategy, planning, engineering and operations across India and Europe. 

At Bharti Airtel, he was responsible for transforming the network architecture to next generation, mobile broadband enabled, data services centric network.  He has previously worked as the CTO at Lebarna Mobiles, member of executive management committee- GSM Association, senior vice president - network architecture and engineering - Bharti Airtel. He has also worked as the deputy general manager in the department of telecommunication, India.  

Prior to Mardikar taking over, Jagbir Singh served as the Group CTO at Reliance Jio Infocomm. However there is no confirmation on where he would be moving to. He had joined the company, three years back before the soft launch of 4G. Singh has also worked with Bharti Airtel for over a decade previously.  

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel also brought back Randeep Singh Sekhon as its CTO last month. Sekhon started his career with Indian Air Force, from where he moved to Spice Telecom, and then led network planning for Airtel a decade ago. Since then, Sekhon has done various roles across Malaysia and Indonesia, first as CTO and then as CTIO. In his last role,  Sekhon was appointed CEO of Hutchison 3 Indonesia where he led the turnaround of the company.
