Silver Peak Offers WAN Optimization for Free
Added 2nd Sep 2011At VMworld this week Silver Peak Systems is introducing a free version of its WAN optimization software for virtual environments as well as an upgrade to its flagship virtual WAN appliance designed for data centers.
The free VX Express (VX-X) software is limited compared to paid versions of Silver Peak products. It only supports connecting one site to one other site, has no management platform and is ineligible for maintenance, the company says.

But it is fully featured and has the same performance numbers as the company's VX 1000 paid appliance. The company has set up a website for community help and support where users can assist each other with configuration and troubleshooting.
Silver Peak expects that half the customers who use the VXX will never become paying customers because point-to-point acceleration is all they'll ever need. But it's hoping the other half will be using the free version to kick the tires and will eventually buy, says Larry Cormier, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Silver Peak.
VXX requires two cores, 100GB of storage and 0.5MB of RAM.
Silver Peak is also introducing a new version of its VRX-8 high-end virtual appliance that now supports up to 256,000 simultaneous user sessions, up from 8,000 in its original release last year. The upgrade was to meet customer demand for branch-to-data center optimization rather than just data center-to-data center connections for backup and replication, Cormier says.
The software requires eight cores, 100GB of storage and 0.5MB of RAM, he says.
The two virtual platforms are part of Silver Peak's Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) that enables deploying its WAN-optimization software on a broad range of network devices such as generic servers, routers and storage devices to save customers on capital outlay.
VRX-8 costs $69,995 for a one-time perpetual license and $36,000 for a one-year subscription.
