Digital Innovation Strategy

Reliance Infrastructure wanted to digitize the process of meter reading and bill generation so as to have instantaneous error free billing. For this, the company built a mobile phone based on spot revenue management application as an end to end solution. The application digitizes the entire billing cycle, from energy billing to collection, analysis and monitoring.

A meter reading is entered in the app and the bill is processed by the software installed in the device, and then the bill is then printed through a Bluetooth thermal printer. The billed data is also transmitted instantaneously to the remote server.  Each meter reader is allotted a specific mobile phone. The meter readers are granted access to the mobile phones only after proper authentication by the remote server. This authentication is done by using the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of the mobile phones.  A photograph of the meter reading is also printed on the bill. The billed record is transmitted in real time to the remote server which facilitates instant monitoring and enables consumers to make online payments as well.

This benefited the company by increasing revenue, reducing man-days and customer complaints. It also reduced irregularities committed by the meter readers.
