Chandan Burnwal is the General Manager IT at JMC Projects. He is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering. and a post graduate in Industrial Engineering. from NITIE, Mumbai. He has 15+ years of SAP projects experience across India, South East Asia and Europe and additional one year of domain experience. 

Digital Strategy:

Engineering and construction services company JMC Projects used to have a home grown ERP solution (IPMS) with logistics and finance as two disintegrated systems. With the company scaling up from a near stagnant business to a CAGR of 15% YoY, the management had a clear vision to use a globally acclaimed and scalable ERP solution.

This was the first SAP S4HANA1610 and first commercial project management implementation in EC&O industry in India. The project was steered by the CFO and executed with a fulltime core team picked selectively by top management, a fulltime consulting partner (PwC) and a highly skilled centre of excellence.

The project was driven from project site at Thane, Maharashtra. It was done with a big bang approach across India with five regions, head office and more than 50 active projects in a span of nine months. Other countries operations viz. Sri Lanka and Ethiopia went live in the next six months.

The entire data in legacy system was brought onto SAP as part of cutover activity and SAP Plant Maintenance was implemented as completely new module from IT perspective. The implementation brings a tight integration of Sales, Cost Planning and Project Execution including procurement, asset management and plant maintenance, production and quality management together with Finance and Controlling.

The solution’s BI provides real-time reporting and Business Objects provides real-time business dashboards across all business functions. Process automation in many areas has reduced the workload significantly.

Implementation of Commercial Project Management as an add-on to S4 HANA provides a versatile development framework with a spreadsheet-based user interface for complicated budgeting process. CPM enables the company to achieve organization-wide budgeting, monitoring and control process, managing multiple budget versions with approval workflows and change management under a tight security control aided by seamless 2-way integration for planning and reporting with execution system.

GST related processes and reports have also been implemented. Integration with GSTN portal through a partner’s ASP-GSP offering was also done seamlessly as part of this implementation. The solution is used as a single platform for entire business starting from an end user to the CFO and CEO of the company to conduct and review business.
