M Venkateshwarlu is the Joint General Manager - corporate IT at Larsen & Toubro. His three-decade career began at L&T Cement Division in 1986. In 2003, he moved to L&T Infotech, following which he joined L&T Machinery & Industrial Products (MIP) IC as Head IT, and was successful in bringing nine business units of MIP in ONE ERP, ONE datacenter, and ONE IT team.
At L&T Corporate IT, Venkateshwarlu heads SAP practice and manages the center of excellence for emerging technologies.
Larsen & Toubro undertook Project SUHANA – the first HANA transformation project in the company. What stands out is the fact that the project was executed in time, within budget, and with minimal external support.
The project was implemented for the Construction Mining Business (CMB) which is part of L&T Group and is engaged in marketing and servicing of a wide range of equipment (like hydraulic excavators and dozers), deployed in the core sectors of the Indian economy.
The HANA transformation project became a benchmark for other business units under the L&T group. While the SUHANA project was in progress, the ERP system was undergoing several changes to take care of the GST requirements. To manage both the projects and ensure timely completion, a parallel SAP landscape was created and was well appreciated by the business.
The IT team also developed a ‘code remediation tool’ which helped automate the rectification work. As a result of the drive, L&T was able to execute Material Requirement Planning (MRP) for 65 plants at a go, and increased the speed by four times. Additionally, the first pick rate improved by six times and increased the service levels to customers. Looking at the success of this project L&T has now taken up migration of 11 other SAP ERP Systems to HANA.
