Infosys has come a long way since its inception in 1981, from a revenue of USD 250 to USD 10.4 billion. In the journey of becoming one of India’s top-most information technology companies, Infosys has seen many leadership changes.
U B Pravin Rao worked in Infosys for 30 years and was appointed as the interim CEO soon after Vishal Sikka’s resignation. Rao was the COO of the company before he took over as the CEO. Rao is also the chairperson of Infosys BPO and a member of National Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Infosys in 2014, for the first time in its history, picked a non-founder to be the next CEO. Vishal Sikka gave a breakthrough business solutions that transformed user and consumer experiences in the company. He resigned in August 2017 citing ‘personal attacks’.
S D Shibulal was one among the six co-founders of Infosys, along with Narayan Murthy. Before he took over as the CEO in 2011, he served as the COO from 2007-2011 while S Gopalakrishnan was the CEO. In 1991, he left Infosys and returned after five years. He led the Internet Consultancy Practice on his return.
S Gopalakrishnan served as the CEO of Infosys for four years before he took over as the vice president from 2011-2014. During his tenure, he was elected as the president of India’s apex Iindustry chamber, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the year 2013-1014. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, in the year 2011.
Nandan Nilekani took over as the CEO after Narayan Murthy and served for five years, during which Infosys' topline grew six fold to USD 3 billion. He was honored with the 2004 ‘Corporate Citizen of the Year’ award during his tenure at Infosys. Also, in 2006, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan award.
Narayan Murthy, was the CEO for 21 years. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Padma Shri (2000) by the Government. The company became a public listed company in 1992 when Murthy was the CEO. Murthy articulated, designed and implemented the Global Delivery Model, which laid the foundation for the huge success in IT service outsourcing from India.
